The Range of a Set of Information

What is a Range in Math?

Definition:Therange of a set of data is the difference between the highest and lowest values in the set.

In the examples below, our first stride is to social club the information from least to greatest. We recommend that yous practise this, also. This is especially important with large sets of information. Let's take a closer look.

Gas jump Example one: The Jaeger family collection through 6 midwestern states on their summertime holiday. Gasoline prices varied from state to state. What is the range of gasoline prices?

$ane.79,  $1.61,  $1.96,  $2.09,  $one.84,  $1.75

Solution: Ordering the data from least to greatest, we get:

$i.61,  $1.75,  $ane.79,  $ane.84,  $1.96,  $2.09

highest - everyman = $ii.09 - $1.61 = $0.48

Reply: $0.48

Blackboard Example 2: Ms. Kaiser listed 9 integers on the blackboard. What is the range of these integers?

xiv,-12,  7,  0,-v,-eight,  17,-xi,  19

Solution: Ordering the data from least to greatest, nosotros get:

-12,-11,-8,-5,  0,  7,  xiv,  17,  19

highest - lowest = 19 --12 = 19 ++12 =+31

Answer:+31

Marathon Instance iii: A marathon race was completed by 5 participants. What is the range of times given in hours below?

two.seven hour,  8.3 hour,  three.5 hr,  5.one hr,  4.9 60 minutes

Solution: Ordering the data from least to greatest, we become:

2.vii,  3.v,  4.ix,  5.1,  8.3

highest - lowest = 8.3 hr - 2.7 hr = 5.half dozen 60 minutes

Answer: 5.vi hours

Summary: The range of a gear up of data is the deviation between the highest and everyman values in the set. To notice it, starting time club the information from least to greatest. And then decrease the smallest value from the largest value in the set.
